Treason of the Vale
Anjali's character, Dwarven Scout
Tormynna Hagen is the first-born daughter of Tholar and Freylin Hagen, missionaries who had recently embraced the Faith of the Sun prior to her birth. When she turned 6, Tholar and Freylin decided to leave their hometown in Trail’s End, Damara to embark on a mission to bring the Faith of the Sun to the wild jungle dwarves of Chult. Living in a thatched hut among thick and sometimes poisonous undergrowth surrounded by stinging insects, gargantuan snakes, and parasitic creatures was a far cry from their cozy cottage with a hearth in Trail’s End, but Tormynna was too young to remember more from her life before the jungle other than a few fleeting images.
Tormynna soon grew accustomed to helping her parents with projects for the local villagers such as digging wells or building the temple to Taiia, in which her mother, Freylin, would hold sermons to convert the dwarves, who still believed in Moradin. She would be given tasks such as gathering small gemstones from the vast cavernous network that lay beneath the jungle floor, which were used to adorn the temple. By the time she was 20, she had become quite skilled in making her way through the underbrush unnoticed, navigating through the dark caverns, as well hunting small jungle animals with her bow and arrow. Tormynna also took a keen interest in helping her father, Tholar, perfect his brewing of stout ale, a technique he had brought with him from Damara. Her father taught her the beer served several purposes – it provided a sense of community during sermon gatherings at the temple, which made the Faith of the Sun more attractive to the native dwarves. Unlike the local water, the beer was also reliably disease-free, and rather than acting as a social lubricant, when the well water became fetid and tainted, it served as a life saving source of hydration. Finally, the beer helped the dwarves gain confidence to defend themselves during Yuan-ti attacks.
The Yuan-ti were humanoid snake monsters that lived in the caverns below the jungle and would hunt the dwarves for sport. Sometimes they would also enslave them to build their lairs within the caverns. While Tormynna was between the ages of 30 and 35, the Yuan-ti attacks began to grow more and more frequent. One night she awoke to the smell of burning. The temple had been sacked, the gemstones stolen and Yuan-ti were pillaging their way through the village. She fled for her life but did not see what happened to her parents. She spent the next ten years on the run in the jungle, laying low, hunting to sustain herself and finding gemstones in the caverns which she occasionally traded at Port Nyranzaru for clothes once hers were tattered, as well as new bows and arrows. Tormynna had also joined a band of dwarves who had fled after the last of the Yuan-ti attacks, however she grew restless of endlessly moving through same jungle underbrush and knew that at heart she wanted a comfortable life with finer things, which she would never find in Chult. She decided to seek out the world beyond for adventure and to eventually gain enough material possessions to afford a place to settle. She knew that with her sure-footedness in uneasy terrain and her ability to persuade many people of most things (she had brought over some of the more stubborn dwarves to the Faith of the Sun), which could often be helped along by her Short and Stout ale, would be assets along the way. After trading in a few choice gems from the caverns, she was on the first frigate out from Chult.
